Baby Gift | Calob

Okay a bit behind on posting.  These were made over the holiday break.

I loved my large receiving blankets when the kids were babies.  My kids still use them on their beds, in the summer as a sheet, and to play with.  So when a friend had her second baby I knew what I wanted to do.

The fabric is 45" wide, heavy weight, good quality flannelet from Periwinkle Quilting here in Saskatoon.  I prewashed it and it's lovely and soft.

Loved the modern boyish print of this fabric.  Here it is 45" square blanket.

Finished it off by serging, folding under, and zig-zaging it.

Had to give a book too - Barefoot Books - perfect for them as big sister will be reading in the next year.

From the small amount of scrap fabric I had left, I put together double sided cloths, perfect for throwing in the diaper bag for quick clean ups / burp ups!

Then bundled it all together to form the present.  Tied it up using the cut-off selvages.  Nothing was left to waste!

Hot Pink Pants | O+S After School

These were pants pre-cut for the Shekinah Retreat but were not completed there.  They were made over the Christmas break just in time for a Christmas present.

You will notice her showing off her new-to-her stuffed dog, a hand-me-down from a friend.  Just what a 6 year old girl needs...another stuffie!!

The fabric is a lighter weight stretch denim in shocking pink from Calgary's Out of Hand store purchased this last summer. Showing the inside as it has that stetch denim look to it.

The trim matched perfectly and is from Periwinkle Quilting here in Saskatoon. It really finishes off the pants...and it was super affordable, unlike some trims at $4+/m, and I used under 2 m.  It's washed really well too.

I really like this pattern as it has a pieced leg, giving the opportunity to add details like the ribbon, giving it that special touch.

The pattern is from Oliver + S - after school top + pants.  I left off the ruffles as it would have been detail-to-death with the ribbon trim.

Grey Pants | O+S Sandbox

These are another fan favourite of my son's.  He likes dressing them up in his new-to-him tie!

He also wanted to show off his new-to-him toy which is 'really strong', thus the face!  My friend came over with a bag of hand-me downs including toys.  Her son is 6 years older.  Talking of years...the fabric is from Fanny's Fabrics back in the mid 90's. Glad I finally made them, even if 20 years later...

Lots of top stitching on these pants - they get worked hard - with front and back pockets for the 'bad man' (action man) to be put into.

Found the waistband a bit too wide and have made notes for future sewing.  My kids like wearing their pants low...and we're not even close to teenage years yet!

The pants were pre-cut for the Shekinah Retreat, but weren't finished there.  However, they were finished in time for Christmas.  Have you ever seen a boy so excited to get clothes!?!

The pattern is my go-to-pants pattern for my boy, Oliver + S Sandbox pants, a downloadable pattern.

Mechanic's Pants | O+S Sandbox

These are a pair of trousers I made at the Shekinah Retreat in November and gave as a Christmas gift.  If you look at the knees, you will see they are well loved!

They are made out of a 'baby cord' cotton fabric printed with a mechanic's equipment - wrench, gas pump, tires, etc.  Perfect for a young lad.  Found in my stash from my days working at Fabricland in Uni when I made things (but not these obviously) for my then young cousins (who are now in Uni themselves).

This is what they looked like moments after coming off the sewing machine.  Notice they are a bit brighter!  They have been worn often, become softer and well, a bit lighter in colour.

Here is a close up of the front - and you can see his personalized label in the back of the waistband too.  He really likes the front pockets.  Big enough for Hot Wheels cars!

And the back with its cute patch pockets.

Sweater Knit Tank | Sil 500

And I got to use up some really well aged stash (back to my teens).  It was a really lightweight, soft, stretchy sweater knit in a cotton or rayon mix perhaps.

It was knit in the round, forming a tube and the tube is just right for my current size.  So I just overlaid the pattern to get the neck and armhole shapes.

I had to raise the armholes and I knew the weight and drape of this fabric would pull everything down...and it worked.  I added length as I knew I wanted a belt worn with it and I wanted a soft, relaxed look.  It's going to be great for summer.

Navy & Striped Tops | Sil 150

It's about time I did some sewing other than for birthday party gifts!

So this is an independent pattern company out of Texas and she does separate fronts for the different cup sizes - B, C & D.  Found her about five years ago and like her no-nonsense approach to sewing.  Her background is clothing factories not home sewing.  It's refreshing!

So the navy top is from a drapey rayon knit from Unique Textiles, while the stripe top is a firm cotton-spandex knit from old, old stash (so old I don't remember where it's from).  Both have been lengthened from the pattern (just at the hem), with the striped one lengthened even more for my taste.  I like to belt tops so they need a bit more length.

I really like the little sleeve, a mini-cap-sleeve.  It's super quick to make up and I love the french darts.  Very flattering for my full bust.  Even though the pattern shows it with sleeves, don't think I'd ever make that version due to the sleeve being so dropped.  Just not my thing.

Birthday Gift | Megan

Another birthday party, another chance to have some sewing fun! The theme was a princess party - seems to be reoccurring in Grade 1...

So we did a skirt, bag, tissue holder and a Princess book (another Barefoot Books gem).

Used my sewing machine ruffler to do the hem and added some fun rick-rack to pull it all together and make it as 'girlie' as possible.  It's for a princess after all.

I personalized the bag, skirt and tissue holder.

I even had enough fabric to line the bag with the same fabric as the skirt hem.

The patterns are all my own creation (simple yet fun) and the fabric is from my mum's donated quilting stash.  Got to use up two whole pieces.  I'm trying to make a dent in my stash and every birthday party helps!!
